Vinca: Reliant, Resilient, Beautiful

We asked long-time member Ms. Marlene about her favorite flower. Her response? "It's hard to pick a favorite. It's like asking who is your favorite child? They all make me happy!"

When asked her thoughts about Vincas being among her favorites, she said "Absolutely! Vincas are like a strong woman. They are reliant, resilient, and beautiful."

About the Vinca

Vinca is an outstanding plant because of its ability to thrive in hot, dry, and sunny conditions with minimal effort, providing brilliant and continuous color all season long. Its low-maintenance requirements, versatility, and general pest and disease resistance make it a favorite for both new and experienced gardeners.

Exceptionally heat and drought tolerant

Native to semi-arid regions of Africa, annual vincas are uniquely adapted to withstand high temperatures and dry spells once established. This makes them a reliable flowering plant for summer heat waves, thriving when many other annuals might struggle. Excellent for us here in North Texas!.

Continuous, season-long blooms

Vinca offers durable, abundant, and colorful flowers from late spring until the first frost. Modern cultivars provide a wide array of colors, including various shades of pink, purple, red, and white. Unlike many other flowers, vinca is "self-cleaning," so you don't need to remove spent blooms (deadheading) to encourage new growth.

Versatile and adaptable

Depending on the variety, vinca can be used for a wide range of landscaping applications.

  • Upright varieties: Create a bold splash of color in flower beds, borders, and mass plantings.

  • Trailing varieties: Add a graceful, cascading effect to containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes.
